This late 1800's antique charcoal drawing of a bust is dated August 1, 1890, and an examplary representation of Classicism and the Paris School. Most likely an academic drawing, the play of stroke and shading bring this truly exquisite and expressive portrait to life. To note, the date and signature are bottom right. The beautiful handmaid laid paper ( 4 visible deckled edges) is classic of the historic French Ingres D''Arches paper mill, so you will note the watermark "MBM" on the paper (hidden under mat). This piece is in very good shape showing only natural signs of aging for an antique of this period.

Classicism in art refers to a style and aesthetic that draws inspiration from the classical art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. It emphasizes harmony, proportion, balance, and idealized beauty, often striving to achieve a sense of order and perfection in its representation of the human figure and nature. Classicism values clarity, simplicity, and restrained emotion, focusing on the ideals of rationality and universality.

Classicism has seen several revivals throughout art history, most notably during the Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Neoclassical movement in the 18th century, and to some extent in academic art during the 19th century.
