An absolutely wonderful early 1900s artwork, expressionistic in style and signed by artist M. Renaud. Though little is known about the artist, this work is a brilliant example of both Expressionism and Fauvism.

Expressionism is an artistic movement where the artist seeks to express emotional experience rather than physical reality. Through exaggerated colors, distorted forms, and bold lines, Expressionism aims to evoke an emotional response from the viewer, often conveying feelings of angst, passion, or introspection.

Fauvism is characterized by its wild brushwork and vibrant, non-naturalistic colors. Emerging in the early 20th century, Fauvist artists, often called "wild beasts" (from the French word "fauve"), sought to break free from traditional color schemes, using intense hues to convey mood and emotion rather than to depict the natural world accurately.

The colors in this piece remain incredibly vivid despite its age, with only minor signs of wear on the outer edges—some fading, yellowing, and foxing are present, but these imperfections add to the piece's character and history.
