This beautiful vintage European portrait of a young woman in isolation, seated in front of a window, is realized in charcoal on paper. The strong contrast of light and shadow is reminiscent of the manner of Edward Hopper (1882-1967), who is widely regarded as the foremost realist painter of 20th-century America. Hopper's works often convey a sense of melancholy and isolation, and while he is best known for his oil paintings, this charcoal piece captures a similar emotional depth and realism.

Realism in the 20th century is characterized by the accurate, detailed, and unembellished depiction of nature or contemporary life. It rejects imaginative idealization in favor of a close observation of outward appearances. This drawing exemplifies these principles through its meticulous rendering and poignant atmosphere, inviting the viewer to contemplate the quiet solitude of the woman's introspective moment. The play of light and shadow not only enhances the realism but also imbues the scene with a profound sense of stillness and introspection.

This beautiful large charcoal drawing is in very good shape with little sign of wear or imperfection as is common for a piece of this age.

This piece comes professionally framed in a classic gallery style moulding Acrylite Conservation Glazing, a UV filtering technology protecting works of art from the harmful effects of indoor and outdoor UV light rays and is half the weight of conventional glass. The frame moulding is available in 4 finishes upon checkout, with additional mat and frame options available upon request.
